Queen and King are the two most popular adult mattress sizes. Choosing between them involves room size, budget, and whether you share with a partner, children, or pets. Here’s how to decide.
Dimensions Compared
Queen: 60″ wide × 80″ long — each partner gets 30″ of width
King: 76″ wide × 80″ long — each partner gets 38″ of width
California King: 72″ wide × 84″ long — narrower but 4″ longer
The Case for Queen
Queen fits standard US bedrooms (10’×10′ minimum). It costs $200–$600 less than a comparable King. Bedding is cheaper and more widely available. For most couples, 30″ per person is genuinely comfortable. Queen is the smart choice if your room is smaller than 12’×12′ or if budget matters.
- ✅ Fits most standard bedrooms
- ✅ Significantly less expensive
- ✅ Cheaper bedding and accessories
- ✅ Easier to move
The Case for King
A King gives each partner 38″ — the width of a twin bed each. Worth the upgrade if you sleep with children or pets, your partner is a sprawler, you have a room of at least 12’×12′, or you simply want maximum space. The Split King option for independent adjustable bases is also only possible with King sizing.
- ✅ 16 inches more width than Queen
- ✅ Comfortable for co-sleeping with children or pets
- ✅ Premium, hotel-suite feel
- ✅ Split King option for adjustable bases
Room Size Is the Deciding Factor
A King in a 10’×10′ room leaves little space for furniture or movement. Use painter’s tape on your floor to visualize both footprints before deciding. Minimum recommended: 12’×12′ for King, 10’×10′ for Queen.
California King: The Niche Option
Cal King is only better than Standard King if one sleeper is over 6’2″. At 72″ wide vs 76″, it’s narrower — and unless you need those extra 4″ of length, Standard King is the better choice for most tall couples.
