What Is CertiPUR-US?
CertiPUR-US is a non-profit certification program for polyurethane foam used in mattresses, furniture, and other bedding products. Foams carrying the CertiPUR-US seal have been independently tested by accredited laboratories and certified to meet specific standards for chemical content and physical performance.
What Does CertiPUR-US Certification Guarantee?
CertiPUR-US certified foams are made without: ozone depleters (CFCs), PBDE flame retardants (linked to health concerns), mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They also have low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality.
What CertiPUR-US Does NOT Cover
CertiPUR-US only applies to polyurethane foam — not to latex, fabric covers, coils, or other mattress components. It’s also a certification of materials, not a guarantee of mattress quality, comfort, or durability. A CertiPUR-US certified foam can still be low-density and prone to early sagging.
Is CertiPUR-US Certification Meaningful?
Yes, genuinely. It provides third-party verification that the foam doesn’t contain specific harmful chemicals — particularly flame retardants and heavy metals that have been associated with health concerns. For consumers concerned about chemical exposure from a product they’ll spend 8 hours a day in contact with, it’s valuable assurance.
However, it’s a floor, not a ceiling. The most eco-conscious mattress buyers look beyond CertiPUR-US to GOTS (organic cotton/wool), GOLS (organic latex), and Greenguard Gold certifications for more comprehensive chemical safety standards.
Which Mattress Brands Use CertiPUR-US Certified Foam?
Most reputable foam and hybrid mattress brands use CertiPUR-US certified foams, including Nectar, Casper, Helix, Tuft & Needle, DreamCloud, and Saatva. It’s effectively a baseline expectation for quality brands in the online mattress space.
The “Off-Gassing” Question
New foam mattresses often have a temporary “new foam” smell when unboxed. This comes from VOCs released during manufacturing. CertiPUR-US certification limits VOC levels, so certified foams off-gas less than uncertified alternatives. The smell typically dissipates within 24–72 hours with ventilation.
