Every quality mattress comes with a warranty, but they vary enormously in length, coverage, and actual usefulness. Understanding what a warranty covers — and what it doesn’t — is essential before you buy.
What Do Mattress Warranties Cover?
Mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects, which typically include: sagging beyond a specified depth (usually 1–1.5 inches), broken or protruding coils, physical flaws in materials or workmanship, and foam that splits or cracks without deliberate damage. A warranty is essentially insurance against the mattress failing to perform as advertised due to manufacturer error.
What Warranties Do NOT Cover
The exclusions are just as important as the coverage. Most warranties exclude: normal wear and sagging below the threshold (e.g., 0.75 inches), comfort preference changes, damage from improper foundation support, staining or soiling (even small stains can void warranties — use a protector), damage from misuse, and the “comfort layer” softening that naturally occurs over time.
Warranty Lengths: What’s Standard?
10 years: Industry standard minimum for quality brands. Casper, Helix, Purple, and Tuft & Needle offer 10-year warranties.
15 years: Extended coverage offered by brands like Avocado and Eight Sleep.
20–25 years: Offered by WinkBed and a few others. Strong confidence signal in build quality.
Lifetime warranty: The gold standard. Saatva and Nectar both offer lifetime warranties, meaning they’ll repair or replace the mattress for as long as you own it, subject to the standard terms.
Non-Prorated vs Prorated Warranties
This is the most important warranty detail most people miss. A non-prorated warranty means the brand covers the full cost of repair or replacement for the entire warranty period. A prorated warranty means your coverage decreases over time — after year 5, you might only be covered for 50% of replacement costs, increasing your out-of-pocket expense.
Watch for hybrid warranties: the first 10 years non-prorated, then prorated. This is common and acceptable. Fully prorated warranties from the first year are consumer-unfriendly.
The Stain Rule: Use a Mattress Protector
This cannot be overstated: virtually every major mattress warranty is voided by staining. A single visible stain — even from water — can disqualify a warranty claim. Using a quality waterproof mattress protector from the very first night of use is essential to preserve warranty validity.
How to File a Warranty Claim
Document the issue with clear photos. Measure any sagging with a ruler and straight edge. Contact brand customer service with your proof of purchase. Have the mattress on a proper, warranty-approved foundation (bed frame with appropriate support). Most brands process valid claims by sending a replacement mattress with instructions for returning the defective one.
